David Jennings On Punchestown – Thursday 27th

3.40 JLT HANDICAP HURDLE

Le Vagabond has not been seen over hurdles since scooting around Tramore in a maiden hurdle last summer but he has made giant strides on the Flat and his mark in that sphere is now 95. He is only rated 119 over hurdles and looks to have lots to offer off that mark. The King Of Brega is interesting off his hurdle mark and it would be dangerous to underestimate him. Bobabout is another that could sneak into the frame.

4.15 Punchestown PIGSBACK.COM NICK COEN MEMORIAL HANDICAP CHASE (GRADE B)

Don’t Touch It won the Grade 1 Herald Novice Hurdle at this meeting last year and can continue his progression over fences by winning this. He warmed up for today’s contest at Fairyhouse last week where he looked in need out the outing and expect a much-improved effort today. He should be hard to beat and can account for Tully East and Sizing Platinum.

4.50 Punchestown FRIENDS FIRST CROSS COUNTRY CHASE FOR THE LA TOUCHE CUP

This is not a vintage renewal of the La Touche and Cantlow looks head and shoulder above his rivals. His Cheltenham form looks rock-solid and he should have little difficulty accounting for stablemate Love Rory.

5.30 Punchestown LADBROKES CHAMPION STAYERS HURDLE (GRADE 1)

This is a cracking contest and preference is for the Gordon Elliott-trained Sutton Place. We don’t know just how good he is yet but has won his last five starts on the trot and the fact that he was able to beat subsequent Coral Cup winner Supasundae at Naas in January while giving him weight speaks volumes. He could be a star. Snow Falcon has been to all the big dances this spring and another big run is on the cards, while British raider Lil Rockerfeller looks sure to run his race and should make the frame.

6.05 Punchestown SHAMROCK ENTERPRISES HANDICAP HURDLE (GRADE B)

Okotoks is lightly-raced and it is interesting to see Davy Russell booked by Tony Martin. He could have lots of scope for improvement off his mark and gets a tentative vote to account for No Comment and the consistent Oscar Sam.

1 Okotoks 2 No Comment 3 Oscar Sam

6.40 Punchestown RYANAIR NOVICE CHASE (GRADE 1)

All eyes will be on Great Field here. He is 3-3 over fences and his recent victory at Thurles was spectacular. He was in a different league to Hurricane Ben and that form has been franked since. A clear round should see him bag a first Grade 1. Baily Cloud could run well at a huge price, while another solid effort from Ball D’Arc is likely.

1 Great Field 2 Baily Cloud 3 Ball D’Arc

7.15 Punchestown ALANNA HOMES MARES NOVICE HURDLE

Atshurai looks the one. She enhanced her reputation with a solid effort behind Let’s Dance in the Dawn Run Mares Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham and might well have won her previous two outings had she not come down at Thurles and Fairyhouse. She looks one of the bets of the day. Good Thyne Tara can complete a 1-2 for Willie Mullins, with Barra put forward to complete the tricast.

7.45 KILDARE POST (C & G) FLAT RACE

Weatherbys Champion Bumper fourth Next Destination is very hard to get away from and will take some stopping under Patrick Mullins. Dead Right is better than he showed over hurdles at Newbury and could chase him home.

1 Next Destination 2 Dead Right 3 Catwalk King
