Grade 1 focus – Leopardstown February 12th

There is a hugely informative card in store at Leopardstown on Sunday, with no less than four Grade 1 races taking place on a stellar days racing. We have taken a closer look at the Grade 1 races on what promises to be a cracking day at the Foxrock track.

2.30pm Spring Juvenile H’dle – Meri Devie beat Sword Fighter and Housesofparliament impressively over Christmas and the way she quickened away really caught the eye but she meets a potentially high class filly here in Dinaria Des Obeaux who absolutely dotted up by almost 30 lengths in her own maiden hurdle at Cork. This promises to be a fascinating battle with the winner sure to be vying for favouritism for the Triumph Hurdle after this.

Dinaria Des Obeaux had an easy succes in his Cork maiden h’dle

3.00pm Deloitte Novice H’dle – A very high class renewal of this Deloitte Hurdle. The form of Bunk Off Early’s race hasn’t really worked out so far, Bravissimo’s hasn’t yet been tested while Barcardys wasn’t that impressive here at Christmas. Barra was 2nd to Joey Sasa before beating Kate Appelby’s Shoes by over 20 lengths but Saturnas looks the safest option. Second to Airlie Beach in the Royal Bond, he followed up by beating Brelade and Riven light here in the Future Champion Novice Hurdle at Christmas.

3.30pm Flogas Novice Chase– The novice chase won by Our Duke at Christmas looked like one of the best that’s been run so far this year and there’s no reason why Disko or A Toi Phil should turn the tables on the winner. Bellshill is obviously a huge danger but the form of his last two victories has not been franked. Perhaps Bleu Et Rouge will prove the biggest danger over a more suitable trip.

4.00 Irish Gold Cup – A whole host of favourites here. Don Poli returned to form last time out behind Outlander while Empire Of Dirt steps up steeply in Grade. Sizing John steps up in distance and is a huge danger to all if getting the trip but preference is for two-time winner Carlingford Lough. The choice of Barry Geraghty, he had a pipe-opener over hurdles recently behind Jezki and that should have put him spot on for this.
