Bet Like A Pro – Tote Jackpot

A winnable looking Pick 6 (which I covered in last week’s blog) at Fairyhouse was not won, meaning a Rollover of €85,808 going to this Sunday at Punchestown. This gives plenty of reason to study the Pick 6 Blog again and take another crack at it.

This week I will switch my attention to another value bet for Punchestown this weekend – the Tote Jackpot. The Jackpot is not as complex as the Pick 6 and requires a smaller budget, thus it will appeal to a higher number of players. A guaranteed Jackpot of 10,000 is on offer for another fantastic card at Punchestown where the feature race is the Grade 1 John Durkan Memorial Chase.

The Jackpot requires you to choose the winners of races 3 – 6 (Including the John Durkan) and with a high quality card it is quite winnable, with a bit of luck of course!

Having looked at the best methods to play the Tote Pick 6 recently something that was very apparent it that significant investment is required to cover a large number of possibilities. With 4 legs instead of 6, the Tote Jackpot allows you reduce the amount you invest or cover more combinations for the same budget.  If we say there are 8 runners on each race on the card the number of possible combinations drops from 262,144 (8x8x8x8x8x8) for the Tote Pick 6 to 4,096 (8x8x8x8) for the Tote Jackpot.

That’s 4,096 runners before you eliminate any of the runners on the card! If you can narrow down most races to two horses you would like on your side, with maybe four in a tricky handicap, such as the first and last Jackpot races on Sunday, then your cost could be a low as (2x2x2x4) €32 while still playing for the entire pool! Ok, you are playing for a smaller pool than the Pick 6 but the average Tote Jackpot pay-out for the first six months of this year was €1,274, a fantastic return on an investment that won’t break the bank.

Based on the system of grading each horse in a race, as discussed in last week’s Tote Pick 6 blog, I would use the same system for choosing my selections for the Tote Irish Jackpot. I have listed an example of a mix of different Jackpot bets that will have you playing for the entire pool and it costs just €42 to play. As I said earlier, this is significantly cheaper than the cost to play the Pick 6 and it may prove easier to win. Once you go through the card and pick your horses, make sure you cover yourself with more than one selection in each race to stand the best possible chance of winning. See below for my Tote Jackpot bet examples:

“A” Selections

Leg 2: 1, 4

Leg 3: 4, 5

The total cost of my Tote Jackpot sample bets is €42. As well picking some “A selections”, I have picked multiple other horses in the other sample bets and have given myself some insurance pick in each of the races. With a guaranteed Sunday Jackpot of €10,000 at Punchestown it could prove to be a very clever investment.
