Gowran Park – Sunday 18th September
Nap of the day – Discipline (3.20)
2.20 – Wayside Flower – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden – Win
A difficult race for punters to start off with and perhaps the experienced gained earlier in the season by the Ger Lyons trained Wayside Flower can prove crucial. Just touched off on her debut at Naas in May, she ran a solid race when fourth in a listed contest over the same course and distance a couple of weeks later and the step up to a mile is an interesting move. Bound looks the pick of the O’Brien runners despite finishing in rear in a Group race at the Curragh recently as her earlier second placing at the Curragh gives her a good chance while Lady Derrynane chased home a smart looking sort at Tipperary last month and along with Dreamy Gal, second at Dundalk last time out, are both capable of reaching the frame. Of the newcomer, Dermot Weld’s Queen Anne’s Lace has a plum draw in stall one and is worth respecting along with Feathery from the local Jim Bolger yard.

2.50 – Grandee – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden – Win
A competitive looking maiden in prospect and Grandee has showed enough promise on his two outings to date to suggest he could be the right solution. He was well supported in the betting market when third in a Curragh maiden in early August and today’s easier ground may be more to his liking. Rekindling shaped with plenty of potential when runner up to a subsequent listed race winner on his only run at the Galway Festival in late July and is definitely one for the short list while World War chased home the well regarded Douglas Macarthur in a Leopardstown maiden on his only start to date and should come on considerably for that first effort. Cosimo Medici was another to show a degree of promise on his debut and is also worth considering but the most interesting newcomer by far is Dermot Weld’s Rich History, a Dubawi half-brother to the very talented Free Eagle, and market support for this one would be highly significant.

3.20 – Discipline – Listed Denny Cordell Lavarack – Lanwades Stud Fillies Stakes – Win
An intriguing contest with two English raiders worthy of plenty of respect and Dermot Weld’s Discipline gets the vote to make it 3 wins from her 4 career starts. This lightly raced sort won a listed race at Naas in late June having earlier went close in a similar type race here in late April and she already won over 7 furlongs of this course on her first start. She looks the type that will continue to progress and might be able to cope with Aljazzi. This English challenger was a narrow winner of a listed contest at Haydock last time out and it must be considered significant that Andrea Atzeni travels over to take the mount. Laganore is very smart on her day and she may have needed the outing when runner up to the useful Eddystone Rock in a conditions race at Tipperary last month having earlier bolted in off top-weight in a Navan handicap and the more the ground dries out the better her chance. Sea Swift and the very consistent Ringside Humour look the pick of the remainder.

3.50 – Set To Fire – Pick 6 Is Heading For €1 Million Handicap (Division 1) – Each/Way
A typically open looking contest where several have many chances and while she has yet to win a race in 14 attempts Set To Fire has definite each way claims here. Her last couple of efforts when fourth to Fair Game (winner again since) at Tipperary and fourth to Rateel at Naas gives her a decent chance and she is fairly drawn in stall 4. Top weight Modern Tutor looks well capable of getting involved having proved a pretty decisive winner at Down Royal on her most recent start 9 days ago. He is 7lb higher in the ratings now but should be capable of another bold showing if the ground continues to dry out sufficiently. Bert Leaf has been knocking on the door in these type of races for a while now and looks set to get involved at the business end of things once again after finishing a fair 6th in a big field at Navan last time out while Double Fast normally runs well around this course and while her recent form is nothing special, she could be a lively player at a decent price. Apache Gold is listed as first reserve here but if getting a run he could well be an each way proposition on the pick of his best form.

4.20 – Annie Irish – Pick 6 Is Heading For €1 Million Handicap (Division 2) – Each/Way
Annie Irish won a division of this race last year and might just be worth siding with again. She has been lightly raced since that success but was not beaten all that far last time out and from a reasonable draw she makes a bit of appeal. Nanny’s Well was a surprise winner of a Listowel maiden last Monday which resulted in a 12lb hike in the ratings for today and she should be among the principals again with the forecast soft ground very much in her favour while Annagassan ran a solid race on her last 2 starts and is definitely one for the short list. Hard Times is another to consider on his victory at Tipperary in July having run with credit in stronger company last time out while Snap Click is one that would be suited by drying conditions and has run two fair races over this course in recent months which suggests another good run is very possible.

4.50 – Papal Parade – Golf Membership Apprentice Handicap – Win
Papal Parade went close at Bellewstown but made no mistake when winning easily at Navan last time and might just follow up. He went up 11lbs for beating Byron Beauty by three lengths over a trip close to this and is taken to defy the handicapper at the main expense of course specialist Enough Is Enough who just lost out to Lady Ranger over seven furlongs here last time. She has won four times here, never over this distance, but should go well again from a favourable draw. Kandahari also runs from a decent draw and he went close when runner-up to Love In The Sun at Listowel on Thursday. If handling the ground, Mainicin might run a big race from the inside stall while at the other side of the draw, Storm Ranger is certainly another to consider on the best of his form.

5.20 – Moonmeister – gowranpark.ie Rated Race – Win
Moonmeister has done all his winning on a sounder surface but his recent form reads well and he might be worth taking a chance with. At the Galway festival, he was a close sixth to his better fancied stable companion Golden Spear in a €100,000 handicap over a mile and half and he did even better when third, beaten a neck and a head, in a £65,000 handicap a York a month ago. Massayan won a maiden narrowly at the Galway festival and might possibly improve while Highly Toxic, a winner in testing conditions at Clonmel in May of last year, has far more experience and is a likely contender. My Direction was twice a winner in three days on much quicker going here and at Tramore last month but he looks to have a little to do at the weights.

5.50 – Ample Sufficiency – Live Music After Racing Maiden – Win
Ample Sufficiency is entitled to improve on his seasonal reappearance behind easy winner Tree Of Knowledge over the course and distance at the end of last month and he should have the winning of this. The winner that day went on to finish a good fourth of five behind Zhukova in a Group 3 at Leopardstown last weekend and the form looks pretty solid. Pacodali never got in a blow in a good handicap at Royal Ascot and is better judged on earlier form when runner-up to the selection’s stable companion Footbridge at Fairyhouse and when an earlier fourth to leading three-year-old Awtaad on soft ground in a listed race at the Curragh in May. Rainfall Radar went up 10lbs in the ratings for finishing five and a half lengths fifth of 13 behind Champagne Or Water in a listed race at Listowel earlier in the week but he will have to improve again to trouble the likely market leaders. There are a few of newcomers to watch out for including Ligeti, Sayar and Tipstaff.
