David Jennings’ Tote Best Bets- Punchestown Festival 2016 – Day 4

THE BETDAQ Punchestown Champion Hurdle (5.30) could be key to having a prolonged stay in both the Tote Pick 6 and tote Jackpot as, by process of elimination, Vroum Vroum Mag is most definitely banker material.

The Tote Pick 6 has a colossal rollover of €68,554, while the Tote Jackpot is once again guaranteed for €25,000 and it is worth banking on Vroum Vroum Mag for both. Let’s deal with the dangers first. My Tent Or Yours had the best part of two years off before running a remarkable race in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham to chase home Annie Power. He did likewise at Aintree but he was drunk all the way up the home straight and it was more than just a case of him not staying.

My Tent Or Yours looked out on his feet and couldn’t even get his feet off the ground to jump the last hurdle, clattering through it and eventually finishing 18 lengths in arrears of the best mare we have seen since Dawn Run. I fear for Nicky Henderson’s charge today after those two tough runs.

Identity Thief was very disappointing at Cheltenham and he was beaten in a novice hurdle he should have won at this meeting last year. Henry De Bromhead has had a superb season but his string do not seem to be firing on all cylinders this week. Sempre Medici is not good enough on all known form and proved that when pulled-up at Cheltenham, while Ted Veale and Fethard Player are just making up the numbers.

That leaves Vroum Vroum Mag who has plenty to prove over two miles in Grade 1 company against the boys for the first time. However, both Ruby Walsh and Willie Mullins seem to think she is more than ready for the challenge and she barely had a race at Cheltenham. The rain has come in time and she has her ground and it would come as no surprise to see her make every yard of the running today. I would be shocked if she was beaten and odds of 7-4 at present look very generous indeed.

The other Grade 1 contest on the card is the Tattersalls Ireland Champion Novice Hurdle (6.05) and the two who appeal most are the returning Disko and O O Seven. Noel Meade has never hidden his admiration for his Gigginstown-owned gelding who suffered a stress fracture earlier in the season and the rain has come in time for him. He looked a class apart when destroying Dundrum Lad by 29 lengths in a Naas maiden hurdle last November and the third that day, Jury Duty, was only beaten a short-head in a competitive handicap yesterday.

O O Seven will relish conditions and put it up to Yorkhill at Sandown earlier in the season. Jer’s Girl is sure to be all the rage but she will have her work cut out to deal with those two.

The Tote Trifecta is guaranteed for €10,000 in the Racing FX Flat Race (7.10) and the consistent, if frustrating, Some Neck has to be included along with Bright Tomorrow from the all conquering Jessica Harrington stable. The other one to consider is Crazyheart from the Paul Nolan stable.
